Pedagogy & Teaching Methodology — DSSSB TGT Notes

B.Ed./teaching-exam focused bullets and trap patterns. English, concise.

1. Learning Theories (brief)

TheoryCore ideaClassroom cue
BehaviourismLearning = change in observable behaviour via stimulus–response; reinforcementDrill, rewards, programmed practice
CognitivismInternal mental processes: attention, memory, schemaAdvance organisers, chunking, meaningful learning
ConstructivismLearners actively build knowledge; prior knowledge mattersProjects, inquiry, collaborative discovery

Trap: Piaget → cognitive development / constructivist leanings; Vygotsky → ZPD, scaffolding, social constructivism; Skinner → operant conditioning (behaviourism); Bruner → discovery / spiral curriculum.

2. Bloom’s Taxonomy (cognitive domain — classic)

Lower → Higher: Knowledge → Comprehension → Application → Analysis → Synthesis → Evaluation
(Revised): Remember → Understand → Apply → Analyze → Evaluate → Create

Level (revised)Verbs (exam favourites)
Rememberdefine, list, recall
Understandexplain, summarise
Applyuse, solve, demonstrate
Analyzecompare, differentiate
Evaluatejudge, critique
Createdesign, construct, compose

Trap: “Create/Synthesis” is highest (revised Create). Evaluation is not lowest.

3. Assessment Types

TermMeaning
Assessment of learningSummative judgement of achievement (exams, final grades)
Assessment for learningFormative; informs teaching & next steps
Assessment as learningStudents monitor/reflect on own learning
FormativeSummative
During learningEnd of unit/term
Feedback-richCertifies achievement
Low stakes oftenHigh stakes often

CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation): continuous (regular) + comprehensive (scholastic + co-scholastic). Linked historically with RTE-era school reforms in India.

Trap: Unit test used only for rank without feedback ≈ of learning; quizzes guiding reteaching ≈ for learning.

4. Inclusive Education

  • All learners, including CWSN (children with special needs), learn in common mainstream settings with support.
  • IEP (Individualised Education Plan), reasonable accommodations, peer support.
  • Contrast: segregation (separate schools) vs integration vs inclusion (system adapts).
  • Inclusive school: accessible curriculum, flexible pedagogy, barrier-free environment, positive ethos.

Trap: Inclusion ≠ only physical placement; requires curricular and social participation.

5. NCF / NCFTE — Keywords

NCF 2005 (National Curriculum Framework) — often tested phrases:

  • Learning without burden
  • Connecting knowledge to life outside school
  • Enriching curriculum beyond textbooks
  • Making exams more flexible; reducing stress
  • Inclusive classroom; plurality; critical pedagogy leanings

NCFTE 2009 (Teacher Education):

  • Reflective practice
  • Teacher as facilitator
  • Theory–practice linkage
  • Inclusive & equitable teacher prep
  • Professional development continuous

Trap: NCF ≠ NCFTE (school curriculum vs teacher education). Don’t invent wrong years if unsure — focus on keywords above.

6. Gender, School & Society

  • School can reproduce or challenge gender stereotypes (textbook images, task allocation, subject choices).
  • Hidden curriculum: unspoken norms, expectations.
  • Equity vs equality: equality = same treatment; equity = fair support for unequal starting points.
  • Co-education debates; safety; gender-sensitive pedagogy.

7. Classroom Management

  • Clear rules, routines, positive reinforcement.
  • Preventive > reactive; engaging teaching reduces disruption.
  • Withitness (Kounin): teacher awareness of whole class.
  • Democratic vs authoritarian vs laissez-faire styles (Lewin-related exam items).
  • Seating, time management, transitions.

Trap: Punishment alone ≠ effective long-term management; overemphasis on silence ≠ learning.

8. Motivation

TypeSource
IntrinsicInterest, curiosity, mastery
ExtrinsicMarks, praise, rewards
  • Maslow hierarchy (physiological → safety → belonging → esteem → self-actualisation) — lower needs first.
  • Achievement motivation; goal orientation (mastery vs performance).
  • Teacher expectancy can affect performance (Pygmalion effect — know name).

9. Teaching Methods — Computer Science focus

MethodIdeaCS use
DemonstrationTeacher shows processIDE use, coding steps, networking setup
LectureVerbal expositionConcepts, theory overview
Project methodExtended purposeful taskApp, website, database project
InductiveExamples → ruleSpot pattern then state algorithm rule
DeductiveRule → examplesState formula then apply
Laboratory / practicalHands-onProgramming lab
Problem-solving / heuristicGuided discoveryDebug challenges
Collaborative / peerGroup workPair programming

Trap: Inductive = particular→general; Deductive = general→particular. Project ≠ mere homework worksheet.

10. ICT in Education

  • ICT: Information and Communication Technology for teaching–learning.
  • Uses: simulation, CAI/CAL, LMS, multimedia, online assessment, OERs.
  • Blended learning; flipped classroom (content at home, practice in class).
  • Digital divide / access equity concerns.
  • Teacher role: facilitator integrating ICT meaningfully (not tech for its own sake).

11. Childhood & Growing Up — Keywords

  • Growth (quantitative) vs Development (qualitative, holistic).
  • Principles: continuous, sequential, individual differences, cephalocaudal / proximodistal (physical).
  • Stages: infancy, childhood, adolescence (identity, peer influence).
  • Nature–nurture interaction.
  • Socialisation agencies: family, school, peers, media.

12. Language Across the Curriculum (LAC)

  • Language not only an “English period” subject — medium for learning all subjects.
  • Academic language vs everyday language.
  • Reading/writing in science/math/CS (explain code, document, read manuals).
  • Multilingualism as resource (India); mother tongue / home language support where policy emphasises.
  • Teacher scaffolds subject-specific vocabulary.

Quick MCQ Checklist

  1. Behaviourism–reinforcement; Constructivism–active construction; Cognitivism–mental processes.
  2. Bloom highest: Create (revised) / Synthesis–Evaluation (classic order care).
  3. For learning = formative; of learning = summative.
  4. CCE = continuous + comprehensive.
  5. NCF 2005: learning without burden; NCFTE: reflective teacher.
  6. Inclusion = system adapts; equity ≠ mere equality.
  7. Inductive vs deductive direction.
  8. ICT serves pedagogy; flipped = homework content + class practice.
  9. Growth ≠ development.
  10. LAC: language in all subjects.
