- Broader than DSS: monitoring environment, strategic overview
Trap: ESS often = EIS + communication/office tools; exam may treat EIS ≈ ESS.
Expert Systems (ES)
Definition: AI program that emulates human expert reasoning in a narrow domain using stored knowledge.

Inference strategies
- Forward chaining: data-driven — start from known facts → fire rules → conclude (e.g., monitoring, diagnosis from symptoms)
- Backward chaining: goal-driven — start from hypothesis → seek evidence that proves it (e.g., consultation, “is X true?”)
Knowledge representation (MCQ hits): production rules, frames, semantic nets, scripts.
Limitations: narrow domain; brittle outside expertise; knowledge acquisition bottleneck; no common sense.
